What the Polls SayIn May 2002 an Angus-Reid poll recorded that only 16% of Americans believed the official story in its entirety. The other 84% ranged from thinking there must have been a cover up of errors to thinking certain Americans were responsible for the attacks. 65% of those polled thought President Bush was hiding something and 8% thought he was mostly lying. A CNN/USA Gallup poll counted 32% of Americans who blamed the Bush administration for the attacks on 9/11 at least in some part. An online CNN poll in October 2006, had decided that Bush was mostly lying. 46% partly blamed the Bush administration for the disaster; and 45% of agreed with the statement "so many unanswered questions about 9/11 remain that Congress or an International Tribunal should re-investigate the attacks, including whether any US government officials consciously allowed or helped facilitate their success." 67% Of Americans in a live MSNBC poll felt the government had left many questions unanswered. In 2006 the American public was becoming decidedly disillusioned about the war in Iraq. At that time, 36% of a Scripps-Howard poll or 44% measured by a Zogby poll found it likely that "federal officials either participated in the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon or took no action to stop them." In addition, 16% of Americans thought that secretly planted explosives, not burning kerosene jet fuel, were the real reason the massive twin towers of the World Trade Center collapsed. 12% believed that the Pentagon was hit by a cruise missile. A live vote on MSNBC at the same time showed that only 28% felt that these 'conspiracy theories' were absurd or disrespectful. By September 2007, 36% of Americans by a Scripps-Howard poll suspected that federal officials either actually assisted in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them so the United States could go to war in the Middle East, with 51% of Americans wanting Congress to “Probe Bush and Cheney Regarding the 9/11 Attacks.” Most recently, a November 2007 Scripps Howard/Ohio University poll indicated that 62% of American adults believe that it is either very likely (32%) or somewhat likely (30%) that their own government chose to ignore specific warnings about the attacks in New York and Washington.
